Book Project: Room

We all have a fear of being taken away by someone that we don’t know. Not only would we be scared for our life but so would our family and friends. Nothing is scarier than not knowing where someone is or if they are okay. In the novel, Room, that’s exactly what happens. Not only does her family think that she is dead; it’s been 7 years since they have seen her, but she has a son who doesn’t know what its like to live in the outdoor world. He has never seen the outside and cannot come to the realization that it is a real thing. Nothing makes sense. To no one. Some things are very hard to comprehend.

1.       Presents. Jack, Ma’s son, has no realization of the world around him. They live in a shed of a backyard and Jack has not been outside of it. On Sundays, Jack receives a present. He thinks this is normal but in the real world, its not. Presents could be something like a book or a toy, but most of the time, its nothing more than food for the week. “”

 

2.       Unlying. Jack doesn’t know what is coming next in his life.  He sees life as something that he is going to do and spend the rest of his time in Room. He thinks it is normal to shower once a week and thinks that everything on tv is fake and the people do not exist. “On other planets its mostly persons that hundreds can fit into the screen, except often ones gets all big and near.”(pg. 11)

 

3.       Dying. After a tragedy that occurs, Ma knows that it is time to get out of Room. She cannot handle it in there any longer and knows that it soon will not be safe for Jack to live there. She thinks of ways to get them both out of there but she has to be very tricky.  Maybe acting like someone died will catch Old Nick’s attention and they will be saved?

 

4.       After. Jack finally learns that everything that he has seen on tv actually is a real thing. He has never met anyone other than his mother before and now he is out in the world trying to figure everything out. He is confused and doesn’t know that this is what is best for him, but his life is about to change drastically.

 

5.       Living. Ma and Jack finally settle down and get used to the real life. There are blocks in the road along the way but nothing is getting in the way of Ma giving Jack the life that he deserves.

Post 3: About "Room"

The first book that I chose to read is "Room". It is about a girl and her son that live in a shed that they call, room. She has been stuck in there for 7 years and her son was book in there. Her son, Jack, has never seen the outdoors before. It is a very good book and is definitely intriguing, but there are also slow parts in it. Id consider the slow parts to be just information regarding their day and the activities that they do in Room. But the intriguing parts are when Old Nick comes in. I am at a very exciting part right now and it is hard to stop reading.

Post 2: What is a book?

A book is a car. Cars can move, can stay in one place, and eventually you have to buy a new one. Just like a book, it has its ups and downs. There are times where you won’t want to put your book down (can’t stop driving) and there are times where it is slow and just don’t want to read anymore (deciding to stay home and not take the car out).I’d say that taking a road trip with no destiny is like reading a book that is so intriguing that you physically cannot put down. There are times where books will be dragging on and there will be times that you finish a book in two days. Cars break down and cars run out of gas; books can run out of gas too. By gas, I mean not very intriguing and plain. But when you get a brand new car, all you want to do is drive it around and never get out of it. Just like a plan new car, a book can be just as exciting.

 

Personally, there is something about the physical book. When I'm reading a book and am very intrigued in it, I don’t want to put it down and sometimes I'll even take it with me if I’m going somewhere. But what if I was at the climax of my book on a Kindle and the battery decides to die? That doesn’t sound like actual reading. Actual reading shouldn’t just die. You should have the physical book in your hand which allows you to do whatever you want with it; without worrying about the percentage of the battery.

 

We all have our own perspectives on what we prefer and what we dislike. Let’s be honest, if all books turn into only being able to read it on e-readers, there will be unhappy people. If books make a comeback and are all still printed, there will be unhappy people. It’s not possible to please everyone and that is just something that we will have to deal with and make compromises.

I wouldnt say that I read too often, but when I do, I read for enjoyment. I read to be able to get away from other things and just take some time for myself. Books that best suit me are ones that I can relate to. I find it to be more intriguing and comforting. Im not going to lie, when I have to read, its probably because Im either 1) forced to in school or 2) having an english teacher as a mother tells me to. I sometimes wonder why I dread to read because I usually find myself actually relaxed and enjoying the book. I guess in my mind, reading sounds painful. But now that Im finding books and authors that I can relate to, im more willing to take time out of my day and enjoy a good book.
